How to Memorize the books of the Bible, a way to teach Children. Any Ideas?
I’ve not heard the song Kelly mentioned but music is the way to go if you can find it. If you can’t try grouping titles of books into 4 or 5 and then offer a sticker or token reward that they can trade in for a bigger reward once all the books have been memorized. There is a certain natural flow to the names when they are grouped in this fashion. (Books of Moses) Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy—- then Joshua, Judges, Ruth—then 1st & 2nd Samuel, 1st & 2nd Kings, 1st & 2nd Chronicles— then Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther, Job— etc… Our memory grasps things easier in groups of around 4 so work with nature and break it into bite size pieces. Hope this helps.
I agree that learning in parts is best – it is good to know, not only that there are 2 big parts, Old and New Testaments, but that each of these is divided into groups too, so as to make more “sense” when reading the whole story of the Bible. I taught my children the books of Moses (the books of the Law) Genesis – Deuteronomy with the tune of “the more we get together”. The 12 books of history to our own made up tune, but I like the previous poster’s thought to group this in 3’s (Joshua, Judges, Ruth; the Samuels the Kings, the Chronicles; Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther). We learned the 5 books of poetry to a tune that someone made up and put on a tape called “each little dewdrop”, which song also explaned a little of what each book focused on (Job is all about patience, Psalms is all about praise, Proverbs are words to live by, Ecclesiastes man’s ways, Song of Solomon teaches all about love…). You could also use the tune “the more we get together” again (“let us sing the books of poetry”…
Hi LisaM, I think Im going to try having the Girls I teach write their own mnemonics. Actually we will write them together, I’ve been practicing at home and it does work. This way they own them. God’s Excellent Love Never Dies. Just and example of what I came up with. I also ordered some CD’s with the Bible songs on them. I’ll keep you posted on how it works. Most important I want to make it fun. My M’Pact girls are all 11, 12, and 13 years old.
