How to Make a Bamboo Flute?
To make a bamboo flute, you will need a propane torch, 1/2″ diameter steel rod, oven mitt, fine-tooth saw, grease pencil, 1/4″ drill bit, vice grips, measuring tape, old bamboo fishing pole, fine sandpaper, linseed oil and a rag. Start by cutting the bamboo fishing pole into a section about 18 – 20 inches. There must be a “knuckle” or piece of fibrous material between the two ends. Measure and mark your flute 1 inch from the base, then measure 6 inches from that mark and mark it again, then make 4 more marks from the second, each 1 inch apart. You will end up with 6 marks altogether. Hold the steel rod on one end while wearing the oven mitt and heat the other end with the propane torch until it is very hot.
