How to Invest in Equities in India as an NRI?
As an NRI/OCB, you can invest in Indian equities in secondary market on repatriation and non-repatriation basis. You will have to open NRE A/c for repatriation or NRO A/c for non-repatriation basis with a designated branch of a bank authorised to deal in foreign exchange. After taking permission from RBI, you can buy/sell shares in the secondary market through the bank. You can also sell any shares that you have acquired through IPO route. Now since most of the high quality stocks are under compulsory demat trading, you will also have to open an account with a Depository Participant (DP) in case you want to trade in these stocks. The concept of depository has eased a lot of problems for NRIs/OCBs.
