I have a 2005 Subaru Forester And I want to replace my spark plugs myself. What is the proper way to install them? Do I have to lube the treads before I put them in? If so what would I use or what would you reconmmend I use to lube them? A: Acessing the plugs is different on different models of cars, but once you have the plugs visible, you use a 5/8th spark plug socket to remove them, a spark plug socket will be labeled as such, at a tool store, and has a rubber boot inside of it, that holds the spark plug from falling out of the socket, this will allow you to raise and lower them from the deep holes that they are located in without them falling out of the socket. Spark plug sockets are only a couple of dollars, and often come with ratchet sets already included. You should always be sure to dust out the area around the spark plug wells to be sure it is clear fo debris, and dirt since when you remove the spark plug dirt and debris can fall directly into the comnbustion chamber.
