How to Identify Egg Bound?
Egg bound is relatively easy to spot if you are on top of your snakes. During the laying season, you MUST check on your snakes in the mornings and evenings, every day! Most snakes lay their eggs at night or in the early morning, so you can easily see when a female is in the process of laying eggs or has already laid them, simply by checking on the snakes first thing in the morning. If a female is in the process of laying eggs, check back every few hours. We have had snakes take up to 6 hours to finish laying (not passing the last egg until about 2 pm in the afternoon), so be patient. If a female looks like she should be laying eggs, and has a clear egg bulge near the tail, but it has been several hours without that egg passing, you may have an instance of egg bound. Check back in a few hours – we like to give her 12 hours from the time we noticed the bulging egg.
