How to I get a Social Security Number (SSN)?
Students must have an offer of employment and work authorization from the OIP in order to receive a Social Security Number. Students must take 1) a letter from the Office of International Programs, 2) a letter from their on-campus supervisor along with 3) their immigration documents to the Social Security Office (located at 77 W. Jackson) in order to apply for a SSN. SSN applications will be considered no more than 30 days before a student’s job start date. Students must be in the U.S. for at least 10 days upon their initial arrival before applying for a SSN. Students can sign up for work authorization and SS letters in the OIP. SSNs are not required to establish a bank account, apply for a temporary state ID or license. Students: please contact the International Student Advisor for more details. On-campus supervisors: please contact the International Student Advisor for the SSN letter template.
