How to grow cactus, in what soil?

Funny I’ve used miracle grow cactus and citrus blend and never had a problem. Only thing is it’s expensive, and there’s too much wood in it. When large pieces of mulch like that decompose they rob nitrogen. Here’s what I do and it works for starting cacti from seed too. 30% general potting mix, sifted to remove large particles. I use a minnow trap to sift. 30% coarse sand. Must be coarse, fine grain will hold water, compact and make root growth difficult. 40% perlite, the perlite will give the fast draining loose mix a cactus needs. Crushed limestone, or decomposed granite works as a good aerator in place of perlite.
