How to Fix a Gas Gauge?
In order to fix a gas gauge you must diagnose the problem. A lot of gas gauge problems are just a blown fuse or loose wire. So check the fuse first. If the fuse is blown it may be a bad voltage limiter. To check for lose wires you need to remove the gas gauge to inspect the wires connected to the back of the gauge. Also, look for any burn or char marks. To test the wiring use an alligator clip jumper and ground the wire from the unit to a ground on the chassis. Turn the key in ignition and see if gauge works. If it works, you need to re-attach wires securely. If it does not work, replace the gauge. The voltage limiter should also be replaced since it has to be removed to get to the back of the gauge. A bad voltage limiter will also make the gas gauge not work. The wiring from the gauge to the gas tank may be broken and have to be repaired. You have to find the wire that runs from the rear of car to the front–usually along the drivers side. Start at rear and follow to the front of car,
