There is a product called “Durhams” Wood filler. It is a powder and you mix it with water. Mix it up by adding a little water at a time until you get the consistancy you want, from thick paste to pourable. Spread it over the cabinet defects with a putty knife and once it dries usually about an hour, sand it smooth with 80 grit sand paper. I have used this in making desk tops and computer furniture that I was going to cover. Because you are going to paint the cabinets this will be your best bet.
