How to encourage kiwi fruit plant?
Some of the newer varieties are self-fertile, i.e. they have both male and female flowers on one plant. If yours is one of these then one is OK. Of the other varieties, one male can pollinate five to eight female plants. The male plant is very vigorous. It can survive minus twenty degrees Celsius . And the flowers only form and open after the frosts, i.e. in May. The plant does need diligent pruning. Never prune in late winter or early spring when the sap is flowing, because the plant “bleeds” at the cut and all the sap drips out, and it takes weeks for the wound to stop, although the plant does survive this. So check it not a male plant.
