Renal failure in dogs can be of 2 types. Acute and chronic kidney failure. Acute kidney failure can be due to some toxins, diet, infection and inherited reasons. Chronic kidney failure is usually related with aging. Symptoms of kidney failure in dogs are increase in water intake and urination, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, depression and dehydration. Treatment of canine renal failure is done in 2 steps. In first step, large quantities of fluids are given intravenously to flush out kidneys. This can stimulate the kidneys to restart the function. 2nd step involves attempts to make the kidneys functional for long time by giving special diet that is low in phosphorus and protein, Use of medicines to remove phosphorus from the body, continuation of fluid therapy, use of drugs for regulation of calcium levels and parathyroid glands, and medicines to produce new blood cells.
