How to deal with family member who has a Terminal Illness?

I have brain cancer. It started out as benign brain tumors that were discovered when I was 30 years old. I had the surgeries and radiation therapy and 4 years ago I was told that the tumors were back and had been upgraded to brain cancer because of their location and the amount of the tumors. This has been a topic and a non-topic in my family for the last 15 years. Everyone knows I have it and everyone respects my rights. If I want to talk about it we segue into the conversation, if not, it is off limits. Many times, my family and friends will take my husband aside and say “how is she REALLY” because I tend to act like everything is okay. That is just who I am. I know that wishing won’t change the facts but I also realize that we don’t need to dwell on it either. The best thing I can do is to enjoy my time that I have left (and the doctors don’t know how long that will be but they do know the tumors will be what kills me) and to focus on the people in my life that I hold dear.
