[this section is obsolete. Mangle Mesa is not supported anymore in VTK>=5.2] (not sure about 5.0) Struggled a few hours to get VTK to do offscreen rendering. I use it to batch process medical images. Without actually producing output on the screen, I still print resulting images in a report to easily review the results of an experiment. Here is how I solved this problem for VTK version 4.2.2. 1.
