To build a simple electromagnet I take a iron or steel nail 3 inch works well and leaving about 3 inches of wire off the nail on either side wrap the wire tightly in a spiral around the nail. Using alligator clips and a battery holder connect one end of the wire to each pole of the battery and start to pick up paper clips. NOTE: disconnect from battery if battery heats up.
