How thick is each layer on a CD-R?
The reflective layer is typically between 50 and 100 nanometers thick. The same is true for the dye-recording layer. The lacquer protective layer applied to all CD-R media is significantly thicker, usually in the range of 3 to 10 micrometers. Many CD-R manufacturers, including Kodak, apply an additional protective layer to improve resistance to handling damage or to allow thermal or inkjet printing. This layer can be 5 – 20 micrometers thick.
