How then, did they know that they had received the baptism of the Holy Spirit?
Every time someone receives the Holy Spirit in the Bible, they began to speak in tongues! Peter said that he Prophet Joel had prophesied about it: Acts 2:16-18 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; 17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: 18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy: (The actual prophecy is found in Joel 2:28) The Prophet Isaiah prophesied about it: Isa 28:11-12 For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people. 12 To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.
