How The Voltage Generated At Drakensberg Power Station?
Drakensburg Power Station is what is called a ‘Pumped-Storage Scheme’. The basic idea is that water is held in a reservoir at the top of the escarpment, then the water is released into long tubes (called pen-stocks). The energy of the falling water in converted to electricity by turning a turbine, which generates electricity. When the demand for power is reduced (usually overnight) 75% of the water is pumped back into the reservoir to be used again. 25% of the water is released for irrigation beyond the power plant.
