America elected its third president in 1800. Washington, who liked to pretend that had no political party, was basically a Federalist, and so was the second president, John Adams, who was running for a second term in 1800. America has always had two factions – the right and the left. The right was the Federalists, then the Whigs, and since 1854 the Republicans. The left was originally the Democratic-Republicans, and then the Democrats. Jefferson became president in 1800, the first Democratic-Republican (left). Actually the election was tied in the Electoral College, and the House of Representatives had to select the winner, between Jefferson and Aaron Burr. Burr became vice president.
