America elected its third president in 1800. Washington, who liked to pretend that had no political party, was basically a Federalist, and so was the second president, John Adams, who was running for a second term in 1800. America has always had two factions – the right and the left. The right was the Federalists, then the Whigs, and since 1854 the Republicans. The left was originally the Democratic-Republicans, and then the Democrats. Jefferson became president in 1800, the first Democratic-Republican (left). Actually the election was tied in the Electoral College, and the House of Representatives had to select the winner, between Jefferson and Aaron Burr. Burr became vice president. Jefferson’s vision of America’s future was that all would be small farmers. The right of the day had the vision which has come to pass, of an America based on commerce, industry, banking and cities.
