How Taiwan has emerged as a leading country in R&D while the neighboring country China is lacking?
The cultural revolution in China by Mao and Jiang Qing crippled it intellectually, and spiritually for a generation. The empty generation currently runs things there, but as more and more people who have not been crippled by complete fear of former friends and family, develop semi-normally being raised by those who always will have that in the back of their minds, hence fear tends to stifle innovation. China’s only product for many years was fear. Fortunately that has changed, somewhat. Hence China’s relative backwardness at the normal societal level (they are quite good at the elite level- if they were fortunate enough to get out at that time period and came back after 1982 to try and help out… and survived the 1989 purges…) Once China becomes more or less fear free for most people who live honest lives, you will see it truly do well.
