Thus he was in a position to negotiate with President Hindenburg of Germany and be appointed Chancellor, the position he used to consolidate total power. The collapse of the economy was the most important factor, in 1928 prior to the financial crisis the party polled only 2.6%, less then a million votes, with just 12 members in the Reichstag, by July 1932 , the party had nearly 14 million votes, 37.4% and 230 members in the Reichstag.
