How successful was the League of Nations?
It was a complete failure on its primary goal of preventing another world war from breaking out. They were successful in interventionist actions such as freeing Albania from Yugoslav invaders through diplomacy. The league also diplomatically arranged the split of Upper Silisia, dividing it between Germany and Poland and thus preventing a war between those two countries. If I’m not mistaken, there was a brief war between Greece and Bulgaria which led to the Greeks leaving Bulgaria and heading back to their country. But the League also had a number of failures, many of which are relatively little-known. A main one was Italy’s invasion of Abyssinia, to which the League applied a few token sanctions. It also failed to restrain Japan on its increasing incursions into China and the Germans rearming. It did nothing about the anschluss with Austria and the German occupation of the Sudetenland.
