How successful has the United Nations been in world affairs since 1945?
It hasn’t really done anything substantial. Single nations such as the US and Britain have done far more for the “global good” if you will than this entity as it’s hard getting so many nations with differing points of view to agree on any set course of action. Assuming that the UN as a majority or even whole decides to actually act on an issue, you commonly see poor results/turn-outs with most nations leaving things up to the US and a few others to handle the brunt of the workload as well as it’s financing. Not trying to say the UN has done nothing though it certainly isn’t operating as effectively as a group of “United Nations” should be.
The United Nations, like just about every organization, has had its successes and its failures. The UN is by no means a perfect organization, as I’m sure is quite obvious, but here are some examples of its successes: 1) The UN was a major forum for discourse during the Cold War 2) Dag Hammarskjold, the second Secretary General of the UN, was a major activist on the international stage and intervened in such conflicts as the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Suez Canal Crisis, and the conflict in the Congo in 1960. 3) The UN’s suborganizations, like the World Health Org (WHO), the UN Children Fund (UNICEF), and the UN Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) have all had major successes in their respective fields, and it would certainly be worthwhile to take a look at their homepages to get an idea of what they do. While you are looking, bear in mind that the UN is not some separate organization, it is the compilation of 192 State Governments who all have their agendas and their sticking points poli
