How strong is Hurricane Earl?
As a Category 4 storm, Hurricane Earl is classified in the second-strongest tier of storms possible, according to the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. As of 7 p.m., the maximum sustained winds recorded were 135 mph, with even stronger momentary gusts. Hurricane-force winds are extending outward up to 70 miles from the center and tropical storm-force winds are extending 200 miles. In addition, the wind speed is expected to strengthen as the storm continues on its path over the next day.
