How steep are the hills on the line?

Whilst the steepest gradient is 1-in-60, the prevailing gradient is 1-in-75 – this is quite a challenge for the smaller engines, mainly because it is a climb several miles long, and is why most of our engines face north – i.e. up the prevailing gradient. A gradient diagram is available.
