The investigation process takes considerable time. References, employers, colleges and law schools, courts, police agencies, credit agencies and driving record agencies are contacted by mail. Fingerprints are submitted to law enforcement for a criminal record check. Most investigations can be completed in eight to ten weeks but some can take up to sixteen weeks or longer. The thoroughness with which the applicant completes the application and the extensiveness of the applicant’s background are the primary variables in the length of time it takes to complete an investigation. Delay results when the applicant doesn’t provide complete or accurate information or doesn’t respond timely to requests for further information. If an applicant cannot get information needed to answer a question, the reason for the omission, including the effort made to get the information, should be explained in the application.
