As a performance assessment, the GRE Analytical Writing section provides a snapshot of a test taker’s analytical writing ability before entry into graduate school. If test takers for whom English is a second language (ESL) do not understand the task being posed to them, their performance on the Analytical Writing section and the Verbal section will be affected.
