How should we go about doing anti-oppression work in an all white community?
Your community is probably more diverse than you know. It is important to know the demographics in your region and know about the services being provided to traditionally underserved communities. Start building reciprocal, collaborative relationships with those providers and look at the needs of the communities they serve. Examine white privilege on both personal and professional levels, and explore how that impacts your work in sexual violence prevention. Be sure that your prevention messages do not support or perpetuate stereotypes and/or bias. Examine what aspects of your program make services less accessible, make services less relevant to communities of color.
