How should smoke alarms be installed?
A fire produces hot smoke and deadly gases that rise toward the ceiling. Smoke alarms should be installed either on the ceiling at least four inches from the nearest wall or high on a wall, four to 12 inches from the ceiling. Smoke alarms are designed to cover a 30′ x 30′ area, so more than one may be needed for large rooms. Contact your local fire department for more specific information.
