HOW SHOULD RETAIL SUPPLIERS INFORM CONSUMERS ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENTAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THEIR PRODUCTS?
Fundamental to effective disclosure is a simple label that is informative, succinct, easily understood and widely available. A uniform format, such as the simple “nutrition label” found on nearly every food product sold in the United States, has been shown to be most effective in educating consumers,5 and should be required of all retail suppliers. The Ratepayer Advocate believes that environmental disclosure should list the fuel sources of a retail supplier’s power and indicate the percentage of power produced from each source.
