How Should Parents Start Planning for Their Autistic Child’s Transition from School to Adulthood? Friday October 13, 2006 Parents with young children on the autism spectrum may feel that they’re out on a limb. But compared with the parents of adults on the spectrum, they’re overwhelmed with options. Between early intervention programs, individualized educational programs (IEP’s), and the many community programs available across the United States, children with disabilities are relatively well served. Then those children hit age 21, and the options dwindle. How should a parent start planning for a child’s transition to adulthood? When is the best time to start thinking about the future?
