How should one go about selecting a therapist?
A. Find one with experience working with the kind of problem which you are having. Ask for references and a resume or vitae from the therapist. This should give you some idea of their qualifications. If you know someone who has used a therapist to successfully help solve some of their issues, this may be a good source. You need someone you can be comfortable with since you will be discussing many very personal things with your therapist. Above all you want one who can help you gain insight into how you contribute to perpetuating your difficulties and how you can change your behavior to affect your life in a positive manner. What you don’t need is a therapist who will just agree with your analysis of your difficulties and provide sympathetic feedback. This can be comforting in the short run but does not usually have any long term benefits.
