How should I treat gastroenteritis caused by Giardia intestinalis?
• Antibiotic treatment is not recommended for healthy individuals with gastroenteritis due to Salmonella infection. • Consider antibiotic treatment for people who: • Are older than 50 years of age. • Are immunocompromised. • Have cardiac valve disease or endovascular abnormalities, including prosthetic vascular grafts. • The antibiotic of choice is ciprofloxacin (check with the microbiology laboratory that the isolate is sensitive). • For more information on prescribing ciprofloxacin, see Prescribing information.
