How should I set up a retirement account while working overseas?

0

I’m currently trying to figure out what kind of retirement account that I should set up. I’m a U.S. citizen currently living in Japan and working for a Japanese company. I have a 401k that I had with a previous company in the U.S. before I moved to Japan which, preferrably, I would like to roll into a future plan. Other issues that I’m concerned about are that I do not pay taxes in the U.S. so pre-tax/post-tax options for an American retirement plan don’t really affect me. That kind of ties into the 401k issue as the 401k is pre-tax so rolling into a post tax plan may be impossible. I also get paid in Japanese yen so I would like to be able to contribute to the plan somewhat easily. Another issue is that I am not sure where I would retire, in the ‘states or in Japan. Even if a solution doesn’t arise given all these conditions I would appreciate some pointers about what to look into.
