How should I fill out the NC-4 tax form if I do not live in North Carolina but am going to work there?
NORTH CAROLINA NC-DOR — North Carolina Department of Revenue Personal Income Taxes NC Form 400 series Resident returns Part year residents and non-residents receiving income from North Carolina sources must determine the portion of their federal taxable income that is subject to North Carolina income tax by completing Lines 51 and 53 on page 4 of form D-400. See the instructions for Lines 51 through 53 on page 12. If you have income from sources within another state or country while you are a resident of North Carolina and the other state or country taxes you on such income, you may be eligible to claim a tax credit on your North Carolina return. See page 13 of your NC instruction booklet under “Credit for Tax Paid to Another State or Country.
Dear Fox: The bottom line is you are a non resident of NC and thus you will file a non resident return. Look at NC dept of revenue and start reading about taxes. You can pull the form from the website and complete it by hand and mail it in to the dept of revenue. If your NC employer asks you to fill out a W4, I would suggest you put single and “0” allowances so some with holding goes to NC and then you will either get a small refund or you will not pay very much tax to NC. This advice was prepared based on our understanding of the tax law in effect at the time it was written as it applies to the facts that you provided. Click on my profile to read more.
