PubMed automatically matches the words entered into the search box (without a search tag) against the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) Translation Table, the Journals Translation Table, and an Author Index. If a match is found in the MeSH translation table, the term will be searched both as MeSH and as a free text word (title, abstract, additional keywords, author as subject, chemical substance names) (search OR-ed). If not a MeSH term, PubMed searches the words in the journals and author indexes. If not found there, the individual terms will be combined (AND-ed) together and searched in All Fields.
