How should cloth diapers be washed?
Wet diapers, and diapers used for babies who are still exclusively breastfed, can be put directly into a diaper pail. The contents of soiled diapers should be dropped into the toilet, and if you choose to, the diapers can be rinsed with a hand shower. We recommend using a dry pail with a deodorizing disk, or baking soda sprinkled on the bottom of the pail, to control odor. When the pail is full, put the diapers and covers into the washing machine and do a pre-rinse cycle with a full basin of water and 1 cup of vinegar if your diapers have developed an ammonia smell. After the rinse cycle is complete run a wash cycle with hot water at the highest level. Use ¼ the amount of detergent you would normally use for a large load. Do not use bleach or fabric softener. Bleach can be very hard on baby’s skin, and fabric softener will reduce the absorbency of the diapers. Dry diapers and diaper covers in the dryer or line dry.
