The most severe pandemic on record is the pandemic of 1918. During the “Spanish Flu,” an estimated fifty million persons around the world died, including approximately 650,000 Americans. The 1957 “Asian Flu” caused one to two million deaths worldwide and 75,000 in the U.S. The most recent pandemic was the “Hong Kong Flu” in 1968. More than 700,000 died worldwide, including more than 34,000 in the U.S.
