How severe are the jellyfish stings?
Stings from the Lions Mane can range from moderate to severe, depending on the victim’s sensitivity and the number of nematocysts involved. There have been reported instances of shock and even death, but these are rare. In some cases it may not be immediately apparent to the affected individual that the Lions Mane is involved, because contact may have occurred with portions of tentacles that have been fragmented by wave action. The Moon Jelly is commonly found washed-up on beaches. Its sting reportedly causes a rash that lasts for hours, although no cases have been documented in Suffolk County.
