How serious is a pneumothorax really?

In an otherwise healthy person. I’ve had two pneumothoraces on the same side and my doctor wants me to have a surgery done but I don’t see the need as I’ve always recovered. Thank you for the answers. The reason I am hesitant about the surgery is there is a good chance there will be long term discomfort and/or pain. That’s what I have been hearing from others who have had the surgery.
