I can only answer with respect to US Petroleum Engineering new college hires and not the UK or anywhere else due to varying pay scales plus varying currency types. However, new college hires with a MSc Petroleum Engineer in the US earn $80,000 to $100,000 per year and that is down slightly due to the downturn in the economy and therefore hiring cut-backs. However, it is a competitive field for now and you need impressive grades in order to land a job. However, the industry is very short of Petroleum Engineers worldwide and many of us will be retiring in the next 5 – 10 years with no one to replace us.
