How safe is the UIC campus?
Campus security is a common concern for people unfamiliar with the area. Actually the campus is safer than our sister campus in Champaign-Urbana. The campus and neighborhood is patroled by both the Chicago Police Department and Campus Security. The neighborhood, just like most of Downtown Chicago is rapidly changing. The South and West Loop are in the middle of gentrification, and the resulting construction is bringing more people to the area. The West or Medical Center campus is busy at all times of the week. New parking structures and lighting systems have also increased the sense of security. The 12th Police District which encompasses UIC reports an eleven percent decrease in crime from 1999, and a thirteen percent decrease in property crimes.
