How safe is CNG?
Natural gas is just as safe if not safer than gasoline in transportation vehicles. The storage containers for CNG are much stronger than standard gasoline tanks. They are subject to federal “severe” abuse tests to withstand high speed collisions, gunshots, etc. CNG is lighter than air, so unlike gasoline, in an accident it would dissipate into the air instead of pooling into flammable puddles. Natural gas is also not toxic so is not a threat to leak and pollute groundwater supplies unlike gasoline. People have used gasoline in their vehicles for so long that they almost forget that it is flammable too. Actually it can be much more dangerous and has a lower ignition temperature than natural gas. Almost any fuel that can move a vehicle requires a great deal of energy potential to be stored in a confined space. This applies to gasoline, CNG , batteries, hydrogen or most any other energy technology. The critical point is that the energy be stored safely and securely, and in that regard CNG
