How ridiculous is the phrase “God Bless America”?
In every great country or civilization, the leaders always asked for the blessing of the gods before entering upon an important venture, domestic or foreign. They also divined for omens and portents. If the omens or portents were bad, the venture was abandoned and vice versa. God bless America is just the latest incarnation of this tried and true tradition. If Jesus was around today, and he could stomach what we have become, he would have thrown the money changers out of the temples of Wall Street. Now we need him to turn 700 billion loaves and fishes into 30 trillion to shore up the economy and get us back to raping the planet for fun and profit.
