Spread rapildy after the Coronation in Britain in 1952 – but this was still an era of austerity and TV’s were regarded as a luxury. The bigger thing was radio. By 1955 though there was enough of a take up for a commercial channel (now ITV) to lauch a national service – the BBC responded by killing off a major character (Grace Archer) in their radio soap opera as a spoiler. But all services broadcast for a very limited time in the evenings (and lunchtimes) and there was none of the 24 hour output we have now. Germany had its own problems and leisure activities were very low on the agenda at this time. The Alliesmaintained armies of cccupation across the former reich – but were divided into east and west as the Cold War got going and after the debacle of the wall, there was relatively little communication.
