How powerful are Marine VHF radios? How far can they reach?
Legally, VHF radios can only go up to 25 watts. This gives a maximum range of up to about 60 nautical miles between aerials (antennas) mounted on tall ships and hills, and 5 nautical miles between aerials mounted on small boats at sea-level. A handheld radio will only go up to 5 watts because 25W uses too much of the battery.
