How popular are speedos in Australia?
Speedos (also called racing bathers, as they are worn for swimming races, or, in slang, ‘cock jocks’) were once the most popular men’s swimwear in Oz. Back in the 1980s and early 90s, almost every Aussie bloke would turn up at the beach or swimming pool in a pair of speedos. Unfortunately, this is no longer the case. While surf lifesavers still wear them during their carnivals and competitions, many surf club members now wear sun safe long sleeve t-shirts and shorts, and younger blokes wear board shorts (boardies) or swimming shorts. These days, only serious swimmers and blokes over 35 can be found wearing speedos at the pool or beach.
