How plastics and polythenes pollute the environment?
OK, so if you or him next door irresponsibly throws away non-biodegradable plastics (yes there are some readily biodegradable ones and others hardly biodegradable) then wherever the plastic goes it causes pollution. This is not the fault of the plastic it is the fault of the prat who throws it away. Plastics are polymers and serve society well in many ways. We need to avoid throwing them away and exploit them as resources once we have finished with them. All plastics except PVC are good fuels whereby we can recover the energy value of the polymer. Many plastics can be melted down and remade into something useful but you tend to lose chemical purity in the recycling process and if you are not careful you waste more energy to recycle than you would get by buring the waste plastic as fuel and making new plastic from scratch. Plastics and polythenes are polymers and of course polymers are hard to decompose. When these are dumped into water bodies they use up lot of oxygen during breakdown, that is they have a large biological oxygen demand (BOD). This then depletes the oxygen in the water and diffusion at the surface is not sufficient to quickly replace the lost oxygen and hence the lack of oxygen causes aquatic plants and animals to die.
