How pervasive is the Internet? Who uses it?
Several demographic surveys of both Internet and WWW users have been conducted, all with slightly different results. Getting a precise picture of Internet demographics and statistics is difficult, if not impossible. However, some general trends emerge and some generalizations can be made based on some real numbers. As of January 2002, there were nearly 35 million sites on the Internet, up from nearly 7 million in August 1995. The greatest percentage (more than 26%) of the host computers were located in commercial organizations. And, as of January 2002, the average age of WWW users was 31; over half were college educated; over half were male; the estimated average income was $59,000; and 29% reported being employed in professional or management positions.
