How or why did Filipinos get Spanish last names, but not the Spanish language?

They were Colonized by the Spanish, I believe they were they for like 300 years, they used to speak Spanish ( it was an official language until 1973) but now only a few of the older people or people of “higher social status” normally speak it. I know that there was an influence on their language and most were converted to Catholicism, that’s another reason for the Spanish Christian names.
