How old should a child be before learning to play the guitar?
Once again, this is more a function of attention span and maturity – not age. However, James likes to point out that his lesson plans for younger students (under 10 years old is his general baseline) are much different than the plans for older students. For the young child, learning guitar is more a function of exposing them to music and teaching them to hold the guitar and play what James refers to as nursery rhyme music. To put it bluntly, parental expectations should be tempered for younger students, though there are exceptions to every rule and expectation.
